Five brothers from Lowell, Massachusetts originally started a clam stand and a 32 room Inn at Hampton Beach. The Dunfey’s went on to become the first company to franchise hotels. Rapid expansion through the 1960s and 1970s grew the company to 8,000 rooms. Dunfey Hotels invented the “Wayfarers Club”, later to become the prototype of the hotel industry’s frequent traveler programs. Dunfey Hotels eventually became the international corporation known as Omni Hotels.
